Jarom asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day. I told him, "money to buy flowers for my pots". He delivered! It's much too cold to plant pots on Mother's Day around here, so my flower money has been sitting waiting for nicer weather.
This past week I finally got around to using it. I wanted some bright and cheery flowers. Something to welcome everyone to our home as they stepped on the front porch. I really wanted bright red geraniums, but when you wait until the week of July Fourth, all bright red geraniums have been taken.
I spotted some deep purple dahlias with black leaves. Oh, they were so pretty and would look so nice with my black rocks in the beds. Or so I thought. I decided to give it a go. But planted in my pots, they aren't quite as cheery looking as I had hoped. It's more like something from "Nightmare Before Christmas." I guess I'm just going to tell people we're really excited for Halloween this year. (They really are pretty with those black leaves, spooky, but pretty.)

I think they are way pretty, not spooky at all. When your smaller flowers fill out it will look stunning!
They look great.. just add some light green sweet potato vines it will really give a pop of color and break up the gray and give a wonderful and different texture than the rest, setting off your flowers.
They grow like crazy and hang over the pots...
I LOVE them...very Tim Burton-esque.
Red geraniums are boring. These dahlias are much more exciting.
Love the patriotic blog look. Cute header picture too!
Happy Holidays! Whichever you're celebrating over there. LOL!
They are super cute. Very refined and beautiful. Be proud of your choice. Everyone has red geraniums. You're unique!!!
Oh, I noticed your gorgeous flowers and LOVED THEM!!! And even if they were straight out of The Nightmare Before Christmas, it is one of my ALL TIME favorite movies. ;) You are so amazing!!! I am so glad I got to see you this week in your beautiful home with the lovely, inviting flowers out front!
Look at the bright side - you don't have to worry about door-to-door salesmen stopping by?!? Oh, I'm only kidding...they look great!!
oooh! I like them! I think they mix nicely with the gray pots!
I like them! When I was shopping for red geraniums...I found Martha Washington geraniums. And they are a dark purple...almost black...with dark leaves. I must admit that I was tempted...but I didn't think you'd be able to see them.
What do you mean, they look great!!! I love the contrast of colors and maroon leaves on anything looks so good....
Your missing out on a give-a-way on my site.....
I don't think it looks Haunted! but until you commented today, I was beginning to wonder if the Haunted house took you captive!
I think they're beautiful! I tried something like that (a cheaper version) last year, but this year decided to be more practical and plant something edible. I have beautiful pepper plants, but they aren't producing a thing. What the heck! Oh well.
