Update on Carter's Teeth

Warning: For you queasy folk, there is going to be a slightly graphic tongue picture at the bottom of this post.

I really have some fun things to blog about and cute pictures to post, but first I'm going to give the latest on Carter. Remember that tooth that abscessed and needed to be pulled? Well, last week we went and tried to do it, but Carter wouldn't even open his mouth. He's had work done before without being sedated and I wanted to give it try without sedation, but it was a no go. So this morning, bright and early we found ourselves at the dentist to drink the sleepy drink.

He is SO funny on that stuff. It works almost instantly for him and he's very hallucinogenic on it too. He kept seeing "fairies" and would try to catch them. They were able to get the tooth out, fill a couple of cavities and replace an old lose filling. There is still more work to be done and we'll go in for round two in a couple of weeks. And yes, we'll be using the sedative again.

As well as the sedative, they numbed him too, so when he woke up, he kept chewing on his tongue. He REFUSED to leave the cotton, washrag, etc. in his mouth so finally Jarom had to just stick his finger in Carter's mouth so he'd quit biting on his tongue. He even bit Jarom a few times.

Well, low and behold, the kid did some major damage to his tongue. He bit two GIANT holes in it. The numbness has worn off and the poor kid's tongue is ULTRA sore. He can't even eat yogurt without crying. Thank goodness the tongue is the fastest healing part of the body!

That tongue picture is kinda cool :-) But the poor thing! Catching fairies and holes in his tongue do not make for a happy day. When do you have to do it again?

Oh Ouch! I don't think I have ever seen anyone do that. Poor kid!

I feel bad for poor little Carter!
None of us like the Dentist ....even us old folk shy away. I also love the primary ideas...great job!

You have a great blog. I'll be back to visit.

Oh! That's so sad, poor guy! He's a trooper, though. I'd love to see him on the sedative! :)

Glad they were able to get so much done in one visit, but ouch on the tongue! Hope this is the one and only time he has to deal with that one:(

How does it sound when you suck air in between your teeth? That's what I am doing!!!!!

Poor thing. I have a "Carter" -- all grown up. My hubbie never goes in for a checkup with some major dental work being scheduled. Sheesh. Luckily, he doesn't chew his tongue to pieces....

Hope your Carter heals up fast. :-(

Elena,
When I was a kid, I bit my tongue right down the middle (don't ask me how that is possible). We were playing a game of tag and I collided with another player. I had a forked toungue. It was so gross. Amazingly, it healed quickly and there is no evidence it ever happened. Pretty amazing what our mouths can do. Hope Carter feels better soon.

cali did that to her tongue last year at the nursery in church. blood everywhere all over her white dress. and two deep deep holes in her little one year old tongue. it was so awful, but like you said, it healed pretty fast! i was worried but didn't need to be.

Oh, I did it. I read it, and looked at it, and...

now I'm queasy.

Poor fella. I wish I hadn't looked, but even MORE, I wish he hadn't chewed. Poor Carter.

I'm going to go lay down now.

Poor guy. It's not fun having teeth problems! I'm glad to hear the holes are now gone. It's really amazing how quickly mouth wounds heal--especially on reslient children!

Damian had an abscess tooth a few months ago. Yep, he got it pulled and had a spacer put in so that the teeth wouldn't close in the spot where another tooth is supposed to grow in. I keep praying it doesn't get infected or mess things up somehow.
