Try-It-Tuesday

Okay, I am so behind this week. I have lots to blog about, but no time. And for the record, my brother was able to get the DVD out of the player, but, alas, the player is still broken. But at least the movie is turned in to the mean old library who insisted on charging me an overdue fee and refused to renew my movie. I even took Kate in to bat her eyes. They must not know a cute girl when they see one.

Anyway, as promised this week's recipe is Red Velvet Cake. My husband's favorite. It dirties practically every bowl in the kitchen so I only make it once a year, but that just makes it all the more enjoyable. Something to look forward to right? Like Christmas.

Most Red Velvet Cake recipes I've seen, have a cream cheese frosting; this one does not. It's more like a twinkie filling or something. (It's DELISH and I could eat the whole bowl by myself.) The cake is SO dense and the frosting is ultra light and it really makes for a yummy combo. I was hoping to have a picture for you, but we're not celebrating his birthday until Thurs., so sorry.

Red Velvet Cake (I like to one and half this and make a triple layer cake.)
Ingredients:
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vinegar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons cocoa
2 ounces red food coloring
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, cream. Mix into a paste; red coloring, cocoa and salt. Sift out flour. Mix vanilla with buttermilk. Dissolve one-teaspoon baking soda into vinegar. Fold buttermilk into soda and vinegar. Add red coloring mixture. Add flour and buttermilk alternately. Bake at 350 degrees 25 to 30 minutes.

Frosting: (I like extra frosting, so I make 1 recipe of this per layer. There will probably be a little bit left over, but it's better to have too much, than not enough.)
5 tablespoons flour
½ cup milk
Paste milk and flour. Cook on low heat, just before boiling. (Gets sort of gummy.)
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup butter
Dash of salt

Mix sugar, butter, salt and vanilla. Beat well. Add to flour mixture. Beat until light and fluffy. Add additional powdered sugar as needed. Cake will keep better in refrigerator.

i made a red velevet cake once and we weren't too impressed with it...and i think that it is b/c the cake IS so dense..though i have absolutely no doubt in my mind that your cake is divine and delish (at the same time!)

That sounds absolutely decadent. I wish there was a picture cause that would really make me go and get it baking.

I have no recipe for T-I-T this week, but will do better next week.

Red Velvet is one of our families favorite. Pasta E Fagioli is on my T~I~T blog for the week. Fall is in the air so soup is on the stove.

They sure DON'T know a cute girl when they see one. Bummer they were so brutal with you. Glad you got it out, but sorry to hear about the player.

Man, you make me want to try this cake, but I did early on in my marriage and it was a failure. I don't dare try it again. Lou says he doesn't care for it as much as an adult, but I think he's just saying that to let me off the hook. I can't make it like his Mamma used to make it. Glad you can!! :)

I always have bad luck with the movies from the library! I hate that they only let you have them for a week, and they won't renew! Can't wait to try your cake!!! Sounds fabulous, and I also am sorry about the prankster husband! I have one myself, so I feel your pain! (When we were dating at Ricks, he had one of his roomates call and ask me to pray at the huge weekly devotional, for a lady like me who HATES to be in front of people, I thought I would die! Too bad I was too dumb to clue in that it was April Fools Day!) Glad you have no flooding issues, oh and thanks for the tip, you always have great ones:)

I already have next weeks T-I-T ready to go since there were so many requests for it.

And I want one too for my birthday. It is not till May so you can decide if you still like me by then.

Red Velvet cake was my dad's favorite. We ought to make it this year in honor of him...

Do you know that for the first time whilst copying a recipe, a sense of trust came over me that if I made ELENA'S recipe, I knew that it would be really good? You've proven it over and over. You know food.

THANK YOU for the red velvet cake recipe. If I ever actually make it, I know it will be as good as you say...especially since Jarom loves it so much too. Now that's a food pass test right there....if Jarom AND Elena say it's good, then it's really good! Can't wait to taste this twinkie like frosting....so curious!
