Stolen Snickers

Yesterday Carter had his first run-in with the law. Okay, he just tried to swipe a candy bar, but still....

I was doing the self check out thing at Albertson's. I turned around to tell Carter it was time to go and I noticed he looked EXTREMLY guilty about something. His arms were folded so I thought maybe he had stuck a pack of gum up his shirt or something. I made him unfold his arms and checked his pockets but didn't find anything. That was when I realized he was secretly chewing something and trying to swallow without me noticing. I made him open his mouth and smelled chocolate. I asked him to show me what he was eating but he wouldn't even talk to me. So I scanned the candy shelf and this is what I found:

Of all the candy bars for me to HAVE to purchase. A DARK snickers. Why he couldn't have biten into a milk chocolate something that I would have enjoyed eating later is beyond me.

We talked about stealing and I asked him if he was a "robber", he just hung his head. Then I told him that Heavenly Father was very disappointed in him and that Carter had just gotten a "black mark in heaven". (That was my mom's old trick to make me feel guilty. NOTHING was worse than thinking I had a black mark in heaven.) We talked about repentance and he really was pretty ashamed. It was so blasted cute I couldn't even be mad at him. Hopefully he learned his lesson and won't ever do it again.

I have to laugh that he actually bit through the wrapper! I guess we all have to learn about repentence some way. Poor Carter!

My youngest seems to always be trying something. The other day I "caught" her eating in the living room - when she knows it's against the rules - and then hiding her pretzels under a pillow - and forgetting about them - so I won't "know" she's eating in the living room.

I keep trying to tell my kids that we moms know and see all. They can't get things past us. Nor should they try. It's not working...

OH NO!!! Black marks in heaven are the worst! lol...

lol...oh Carter. I remember my first swiping experience. Do I dare to admit it?

Yes...you're my friend...

It was some sort of small dime rock candy thing at the local corner market. I left the store and felt so guilty (this is where I suddenly became an angel) that I turned around, went back into the store, and told the check-out lady what I had done. I know! Wasn't I a good little girl? The older lady clerk gave me a look of disapproval with a glint of a smile in her eye (small towns can be nice). I said I was sorry and left.

I never stole again I was so proud of myself. As a matter of fact, just about four years ago, I drove up to an ATM machine, and there was $80.00 hanging out of the machine.

Mmmmmm...money!

I brought it into the bank with thoughts of what I could do with that "free" money. It was a lot harder as a middle aged adult I must admit, but I thought about how I would hate myself knowing I had "stolen" it, so I brought it (more grudgingly) into the bank and told them what had happened.

It was strange, they all looked at me through the corners of their eyes as though as if I were a bank robber or something. I swear, I'm just trying to do the right thing here! It definitely wasn't the same twinkle in the eye I got from the corner store lady. They were all silent. Maybe they were all thinking, "why didn't she just take the money? I would have?"

Or MAYBE....oooh, I just thought of this....maybe there was supposed to be $100.00 there, and I only gave them $80.00. I swear there was only 80 bucks there! Oh forget it.

Wasn't this post supposed to be all about me anyway?

Fur- Yes he must have been absolutely famished.

Jewelle- Repentence can be a tough lesson sometimes.

Kat- Yes, the all knowing mom; can't hide ANYTHING from her.

Miki- I LOVED the ATM story! LOL! That is strange. Who drives off without their money? IT's a good thing you took it in b/c the ATM's have cameras and they would have seen you take it. (Not that you ever would have anyway.)

This is SO funny! I have to tell you my stealing story-- I was about Carter's age (I think maybe a year older) and I stole a Cadbury Egg from our grocery store (which, by the way, I can't stand now!). My mom found out, of course, and took me back to the grocery store to talk to the manager. He made me come up into his office and sit down and told me that if I stole again, I would go to jail. And then he said the thing that sticks in my mind forever, and the thing that absolutely mortified me as a little kid: "You know what they eat in jail? TV DINNERS!" No more stealing for me!

Elise- WHERE have you been??!! I LOVED TV dinners as a kid. I think his warning might have tempted me more. (I was WAY too chicken to steal anything.) So funny.

Oh, I'm so glad I'm not the only mother with a thief. Ogden once stole a package or gum from Fred Meyer. We didn't realize it until we got in the car, so he had to go in and apologize and pay for it, then we threw the gum away.

When will they learn that we mom's can ALWAYS smell chocolate? So sorry it wasn't milk chocolate.

Ah mom! He only wanted a taste--he put it back for cryin' outloud :)!

Poor Carter! I think I was that age when my babysitter's daughter convinced me to steal a pack of gum. I STILL feel guilty about that.

Now I am not against receiving bitten into Dark Snickers in the mail. I'm just sayin'.... :)!

Have a great, long weekend. I'm sure you guys will do something terribly exciting involving family, fun, and food!

i don't think that you can ever really be mad at your children in those kinds of situations, b/c even though technically they know that they've done something wrong...usually they don't understand the reasons why...good teaching moment (why do they always come in the store?)
thanks for stopping by my place yesterday, it was great to see you! (espeically considering that i see you around a lot...also, you need to put your info on "good mail" so that you can actually GET some "good mail!"

Here's another thief story for ya. Lucy has stolen candy before and we took it back.
I though Gracie learned from her little sister's experiece. Until a few weeks ago. Gracie took a bite out of a nectarine and then secretly put it back in the fruit bin. I barely noticed her chewing. We had to sort through all the nectarines to find "the one". I felt very guilty putting our germs over ALL the fruit.
I guess at least she was trying to eat healthy?

Ohhhhhhhhh! A black mark. I have a feeling I might have to use that one on Josh. That kid knows how to find all sorts of trouble.
